Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, and Hearing of the Complaints of IEA, in Uruzgan Province, committed to protecting women’s rights and preventing violence against women in society, prevented the forced marriage of a 12-year-old girl through the mediation of tribal elders.

Her father had intended to marry her off, against her will, to a 50-year-old elderly man in exchange for a large sum of money. Regarding the matter, officials (Muhtasibs) of the department stated that this un-Is,la,mic case involved family members of the underage girl attempting to marry her to a 50-year-old man without her consent in return for money, but the officials of the Ministry intervened and stopped it.

The muhtasibs further added that no one has the right to buy or sell a free human being for money, and that the officials of the Is,la,mic Em,i,rate are always striving to provide people with a peaceful and secure life.

This comes as the muhtasibs of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing Complaints have resolved thousands of cases across many provinces of the country related to women’s rights, including forced marriages, domestic confinement, domestic violence, bride price disputes, and inheritance issues, and their efforts in this regard are still ongoing
