A young woman in Yangi Qala district of Takhar Province, who had intended to commit suicide due to family pressure regarding marriage, was rescued from her fragile situation and freed from a forced marriage through the efforts of officials (Muhtasibs) from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing of Complaints of IEA.
Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry in the province stated that the young woman had been under severe psychological distress because of family pressure and the disregard for her Sh/ar/ia-granted right to consent in choosing a husband. Following complaints filed by local residents, her close relatives were summoned to the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.
During the meeting, officials of the department provided religious guidance and recommendations regarding the Sh/ar/ia rights of women, particularly the necessity of mutual consent in marriage contracts.
They emphasized that forced marriage is against the principles and rulings of Is/la/mic Sh/ar/ia.
Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry in Takhar Province, while stressing the better implementation of Is/la/mic Sh/ar/ia rulings, called on the public to respect the Sh/ar/ia rights of women and avoid forced marriages.
They further stated that in Is/lam, a woman’s consent in marriage is considered a fundamental principle.
Meanwhile, a number of residents of Yangi Qala district welcomed the timely and effective efforts of the officials of this department and called for the continuation of such efforts to prevent similar incidents across Takhar Province.
