Authorities in Kandahar prevented the non-Sharia marriage of an 8-year-old girl to a 28-year-old man

Officials (Muhtasibs) from the Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Kandahar Province, committed to protecting women's rights and preventing harmful practices, prevented the non-Sh/ar/ia marriage of an eight-year-old girl in Zhari District. Members of her family had intended to marry her, against her will, to a 28-year-old man in exchange for a large sum of money.
The girl, who was being forced into marriage with a much older man due to harmful customs and financial incentives, was rescued through the intervention of the department's inspectors.
They also urged her family members to refrain from engaging in such harmful practices in the future.
Meanwhile, local residents have praised the inspectors' efforts to promote virtue, prevent wrongdoing, and protect and uphold women's rights under Is/la/mic law.
They expressed confidence that these efforts will help reduce harmful customs and non-Sh/ar/ia practices within society.
This comes as inspectors (Muhtasibs) from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing the Complaints of IEA, have reportedly resolved hundreds of cases across many provinces of the country involving forced marriages, confinement of women in homes, domestic violence, bride price disputes, and inheritance rights. Their efforts in this regard are said to be ongoing.
