Addressing the complaint of a widowed woman and ensuring her Sharia-based right to choose her husband in Nangarhar Province
Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue, Prevention of Vice, and Hearing of Complaints in Nangarhar Province conducted a comprehensive review of the case of a widowed woman in order to address public complaints, ensure the Sharia rights of citizens, and support the legitimate rights of women.
Officials (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry in the province stated that the woman, whose husband had died two years ago, complained that her husband’s family was preventing her from remarrying and wanted to force her to marry one of the members of the same family.
After thoroughly examining the case, officials (Muhtasibs) of the Ministry summoned the woman’s in-laws to the provincial Directorate for the Promotion of Virtue.
The matter was discussed and reviewed in accordance with the provisions of Islamic Sharia and Article 3 of Decree No. (83) of the Amir al-Mu’minin.
During the meeting, emphasis was placed on respecting the Sharia rights of women, the prohibition of coercion in marriage, and the necessity of observing Islamic legal requirements.
As a result of these discussions and guidance, the woman’s in-laws withdrew their previous position and pledged that they would not prevent the widow from remarrying.
Consequently, the woman was given the opportunity, in accordance with Islamic Sharia and after observing the prescribed waiting period (iddah) and other religious requirements, to decide about her future and marry the person of her choice.
